Until the end of 1999 John Bartle was the Joint Chief Executive of Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH), the advertising agency he co-founded in 1982.
He began his career in 1965 with Cadbury (later Cadbury Schweppes) and worked there for eight years. Left in 1973 to become a co-founder of the London office of advertising agency TBWA. Initially Planning Director there, he was Joint Managing Director from 1979 until leaving to start BBH in 1982.
He now has involvement in a number of organisations, both commercial and voluntary sector, in non-executive/advisory capacities. These include the Guardian Media Group, digital production company Dare and Barnardos.
He was President of the IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) from 1995 to 1997, spent a number of years on the Council of the UK Advertising Association and is currently the President of NABS, the charity for the communications industry.
He was awarded the CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list in 2003.
