"After protracted negotiations involving the world's leading talent agencies, Gadfly is delighted to be able to present readers with an exclusive image from the infamous
i-level Summer Ball held a couple of weeks back. Hosted in the imposing surroundings of Dartmouth House, the headquarters of the English Speaking Union (ESU), this was well up to the usual standard, from the finger food to the string quartet.
Knowing that hiring experienced ad executives like David Pattison doesn't come cheap, Gadders was keen to sniff out any signs of cost-cutting. But apart from a canny reuse of fake money left over from last year's Bond-themed party, the champagne seemed to be flowing as freely as ever. Given that the ESU's mission is to promote 'international understanding and friendship through the use of the English language', Gadfly was looking forward to a few inspiring words from the balcony by a loquacious Leveller, but there was no speech this year.
Even the dapper Charlie Dobres, whose relaxed demeanour is a testament to the non-exec life, stayed among the groundlings.
Elsewhere among the crowd were a number of IASH members, none of whom was allowed to talk to the press - at least, that's what one of them told Gadders. But just to show all's fair in love and online marketing, here's a paparazzi snap of Google agency supremo Damian Burns, on a fleeting visit to one of his 22 territories, enjoying a drink with i-level search goddess Amanda Davie."
