China hits 200 million netizens

New internet users across China increased at the rate of 200 a minute in the second half of last year reaching a total internet population of 210 million. The figures released by the China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC) confirm speculation that the country will soon take over the US as the world’s largest population of internet users. The US is now ahead by only 5 million users. China saw an increase of 25 million internet users in the first half of 2007 and 48 million more were added in the second half of the year. Broadband users accounted for 163 million of the total and wireless users a further 50.4 million.
