In-flight internet access on the rise
01/02/2008
Four major US carriers, Southwest, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines and Virgin America have announced that they will launch onboard WiFi access later this year. This follows the BetaBlue offering from JetBlue. Air France has offered internet access since mid-December. Others experimenting with the service include Qantas and Emirates which launched WiFi access on several Airbus A340-500 jets flying between Dubai and destinations in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland and Germany last year. Internet access on planes isn’t new. Boeing abandoned its Connexion in-flight wireless service in 2006 after a six-year effort. It was used by Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa.
