Rock band revolution
01/12/2007
MTV's launch of Rock Band (www.rockband.com) in the US last month wasn't just another video game release. It aims to revolutionise the music industry in the same way that music videos did in the 80s. It follows on from the success of Activision's Guitar Hero (Guitar Hero 3 raked in $115 million in the first week it went on sale). Users will simulate playing in a band using controls shaped like guitars, drum kits and mics. Although compared to a karaoke or air-guitar experience, it also offers the user the chance to actually create real notes on a guitar by pressing tabs on the fretboard. No strumming is required. A limited number of tracks will be released each month for download online. To play the game, users can be in different locations so you could have a bass player in Tokyo, lead guitarist in Beijing, drummer in Lagos and singer in London.
