Dreaming of a green Christmas

01/12/2007

Already sick of the wastage and cheesiness of Christmas festivities? A visit to the Rockefeller Centre in New York might help you feel that warm glow inside again. Instead of using traditional incandescent light-bulbs on the massive and now iconic Christmas tree, 30,000 energy efficient, multi-coloured LEDS will be used. The first Christmas tree to be erected here was put up in the 1930s during the Great Depression when the centre was still a building site and its construction meant salaries for the workers. The LEDs will reduce electricity consumption from 3,510 to 1,297 kilowatt hours per day.
