Social networks received more UK traffic than webmail services for the first time in October. The top 25 social network sites received 5.17% of all UK internet visits, compared to 4.98% for email services like Hotmail, and Yahoo! according to a Hitwise report.

Meanwhile, in a separate survey by Datamonitor/Dimension Data released last month, email has taken over the telephone as the preferred form of communication with 100% using it compared with 80% using the telephone and only 76% using  mobile phones. The research surveyed 390 IT managers and 524 enterprise users across 13 countries within the United States, Asia Pacific and Europe, Middle East and Africa.
