Sounding the death knol for Wikipedia?
01/01/2008
Anxious to have its fingers in every web pie, Google has ventured into user-generated encyclopedia territory. Launched last month, the Knol, aims to compile expert knowledge on any subject in a massive web-based project. Knol stands for a unit of knowledge. Authors will get a share of the revenue and advertising will be incorporated in the pages which are likely to figure very highly on Google search engine rankings once the project gets off the ground. Authors will be given the same prominence as they are in books and scientific journals and encouraged to “put their reputation on the line” according to the Google blog. For a start, only invited authors will be allowed to contribute.
