Divorce is the worst thing for the planet says recent research by Michigan State University, based on the 46% of marriages which end in divorce in the US. Having two separate homes amounts to 38 million more rooms to light, heat and cool amounting to 73 billion kilowatt-hours more electricity and 627 billion gallons of water. Two homes means two cars (often SUVs where there are kids involved), double birthday gifts and double holidays. Singletons getting together with a divorcee could undo some of this ecological damage, though. “Living-in-sin” is also fairly eco-friendly.
