'Platform agnostic' gaming

01/11/2007

Consumers and developers will gain from a platform agnostic gaming environment, Gerhard Florin, head of international publishing at Electronic Arts (EA) has said in an interview with the BBC. "We definitely don't want to have one platform which is a walled garden. Nintendo, Sony and Xbox could become developers of content rather than consoles… You don't need an Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii," he said. Industry sources fear that the lack of competition could completely dampen innovation. Wii Sports for instance, which takes a revolutionary approach to gaming, won six Bafta awards recently. Arguing the case for a common platform, games consultant Nick Parker said future gaming will probably "just require potentially a £49.99 box from Tesco made in China with a hard drive, a Wi-Fi connection and a games engine inside."
