Ask.com has recently taken the user customisation of their search engine to a new level. You are now able to upload your own backgrounds for the main page of Ask - so if you don't like theirs you can change it to your liking. This new feature is simple to use so non-technical users can make the changes.

Other search engines also allow customisation of their site. Google allows you to upload images and create themes with iGoogle. The customisation of iGoogle is much more versatile, allowing for even time-specific actions (different backgrounds depending on the time of day for example). However, it is a much more complex process and is likely to only appeal to the more technical of users, with most being put off by having to read the developer's guide.

Yahoo and MSN Live do not currently facilitate custom background images and uploading, although they do allow for layout changes and different colour schemes.
