Universal-Google duo to meet Apple head on

01/09/2007

Universal, the world’s largest record label, will sell DRM (digital rights management) - free downloads via Google’s music download arm, gBox. The deal secured by the partners, dubbed the dangerous duo, also involves Universal’s ads appearing whenever a search is made for an artist on Google. Universal artists will still be available on iTunes. Universal owns more than a dozen labels including Decca, Mercury, Polydor and Deutsche Gramophone. It distributes an eclectic range of music from Akon to Ashkenazy including 50 Cent, Eminem, Black Eyed Peas, Gwen Stefani, Prince, Kanye West, Mary J Blige, Sting and U2.
