Microsoft gets touchy-feely

01/07/2007

As Apple continues to milk the iPod for all it is worth, arch-rival Microsoft has unveiled its own vision of the future. Microsoft Surface is a ‘coffee-table’ style touchscreen PC, consisting of a 30 inch display under a hard plastic tabletop. Surface will recognise and interact with objects placed on it – for example, users could put a mobile handset onto an instore display to download ringtones or top up credit. Digital finger painting and jigsaw puzzles are some of the other possibilities.  Priced between $5,000 and $10,000, Surface will initially be made available to hospitality venues such as hotels and casinos, although consumer versions are expected to follow.
