US ready for digital switchover?

The US could provide a valuable test run for the UK switchover to digital TV, set to go fully live by 2012.  On 17 February 2009, the US analogue signal will be switched off. While the Federal government and broadcast industries are launching an information campaign, and will offer $40 coupons towards digital converter boxes, several US congressmen have raised concerns that up to 21 million households will not be ready. Whatever happens, our own government and broadcasters will watch closely ahead of the first phase of UK switchover, due to take place in Cumbria this autumn.
