Get ready for .sports, .fun, .anything
ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) the non-profit organisation which manages the internet domain system unanimously voted, in Paris last week, to allow people and businesses to choose their own domain suffix. Registration of a "top-level" domain is estimated at between £100,000 and £500,000, suggesting that flush individuals and Corporations will move into this area first. The earliest new domains will be accepted is April next year, with the aim of new domains being live by the end of 2009.
